The Mighty Sixth Grade RED Team earned their first trophy of the season at the Driod Rarz Classic, March 30, 2013.
My player of the tournament at BIG SHOTS SOUTHERN SHOOTOUT was without question Atlanta Select's 2014 6'5 Darius Bridges. Last week, Darius tragically lost his house in a fire; losing his home, his belongings, his clothes, everything but his love for the game, friends and family. With the help of George Zeigler, Richard Penny, and the Atlanta Select program Darius was able to find shelter, shoes to play and turned to his second home, the basketball court, to find comfort. In his first game on Saturday, Darius was not only out on the court playing, he put on a show scoring 24 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Bridges went on to lead the 17u division in all 3 categories.
Over the years, we've been fortunate to have some great teams, talent, and games in BIG SHOTS but the performance of Darius Bridges this weekend may go down as my favorite moment yet. Seeing him excel at high level, enjoy playing the game he loved with his friends and simply smile was truly a special moment. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family in their recovery. Think BIG!
